Personal Development

Elective Curriculum, Curriculum Experiences and Kenton Extra

We provide our students with a range of opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding of the wider world.  We think this is an important part of the personal development of our students, providing them with opportunities they may not have got otherwise.

Our unique Elective Curriculum sees students select two activities a term to take part in during the final thirty five minutes of school each day. A huge array of artistic, sporting, performance, debating, individual and team activities allow students to try something they have never done before or develop an existing skill or passion.  The Elective Curriculum gives students the opportunity to mix in different social groups and build personal skills that will be useful to them in further education or work.  Being able to develop an interest each day provides students with an additional reason to attend school regularly.

All students can attend a Curriculum Experience each year; these allow students to visit somewhere they may have never been before.  These are in addition to a wide range of other visits to university departments, theatres, work places, sporting arenas, performance venues, parliament and other education providers, to name just a few.

  • Year 7 – Marsden Rock – a field trip linked to geography and history
  • Year8 – The Sill – a field trip to Northumberland National Park for walking and creative workshops with links to geography, history, art and English literature
  • Year 9 – Beamish Open Air Museum – history and PSHE
  • Year 9 – Workplace visits
  • Year 10 – All students visit a University
  • Year 11 – Super Learning Days take place in venues such as St James’ Park and Hancock Museum
  • Sixth Form – all can visit a university, go to the theatre or attend subject conferences as part of their comprehensive enrichment programme

Our Enrichment Programme  includes a range of activities such as sports, cadets, drama, music, science and chess.  The offer has been reviewed by our Student Leadership Team who discussed requested further activities to be included.  Our enrichment offer provides further opportunities for representation through sports, STEM and the arts.

Please encourage your child to consider attending some of our enrichment activities. Our current programme can be found here.  In addition we offer an Academic Enrichment programme for Year 11 students, allowing them to take part in sessions focussed on achieving exam success each night of the week.
