Why study this course? 

This is a highly valued, and highly academic course which covers a diverse range of texts across different forms of literature. You will have an interest in literature and want to dive deeper into its rich tapestry – applying theory and criticisms from gender, Marxism and feminism along the way. You will be given the chance to complete coursework on a text of your choice in comparison to another. 

What interests should you have? 

An interest in the diverse range of literature and studying the motivations behind writers’ choices of narrative, character and theme. You will enjoy analysing texts, evaluating contextual influence and arguing your critical take on literature. 

How will you be assessed? 
  • Exam one – 30%
  • Exam two – 30%
  • Exam three – 20%
  • Non-exam assessment – 20% 
What will the course cover? 

The course will cover modern poetry by Plath and Hughes alongside historical poetry from Chaucer. Three drama texts across eras, and across the world: A Streetcar Named Desire, The Duchess of Malfi and Hamlet by Shakespeare. Unseen poems and prose will be visited. You will complete your NEA which will compare a text of choice to a core dystopian text on a question of your choosing.
