Why study this course?

Film Studies allows students to broaden their understanding of cinema from around the world, and offers a chance to explore different cultures and histories, think both critically and creatively, and produce their own artistic masterpiece.

What interests should you have?

Students should have an interest in cinema, documentaries, media and different cultures. They should also have a creative flare, with a desire to bring their ideas to life.

How will you be assessed?
  • Component 1: Varieties of film and filmmaking (35%)
    Written exam: 2½ hours
  • Component 2: Global filmmaking perspectives (35%) 
    Written exam: 2½ hours
  • Component 3: Production (30%)
    Non-exam assessment
  • Creating a short film – OR –
    Writing and digitally photographing a screenplay

Component 1: Varieties of film and filmmaking

  • Section A: Hollywood 1930-1990
  • Section B: American film since
    2005 / 2012
  • Section C: British film since 1995

Component 2: Global filmmaking perspectives

  • Section A: Global film (two-film study)
  • Section B: Documentary film
  • Section C: Film movements – Silent cinema
  • Section D: Film movements – Experimental film (1960-2001)
