Mathematical knowledge plays an important role in understanding the content of other subjects, such as science and social studies. 

What interests should you have? 

A firm interest in Maths at GCSE is crucial. You should also be interested in statistical analysis and mechanics and have a natural flair for mathematics. 

How will you be assessed? 

Three exam papers: 

  • Pure 1: (1/3 marks) 
  • Pure 2: (1/3 marks) 
  • Applied: mechanics and statistics (1/3 marks) 
What will the course cover? 

The Pure section of the course will cover: Algebraic expressions, quadratic equations and inequalities, graphs and transformations, straight line graphs, circles, algebraic methods, the binomial expansion, trigonometric ratios, trigonometric identities and equations, vectors, differentiation, integration, exponentials and logarithms, functions and graphs, sequences and series, radians, trigonometric modelling, parametric equations and numerical methods. 

The Applied section of the course will cover: statistics, measures of location and spread, representing data, correlation, probability, statistical distributions, hypotheses testing, conditional probability, the normal distribution, modelling in mechanics, constant acceleration, forces and motion, variable acceleration, moments, forces and friction, projectiles, application of forces, and further kinematics.
