Social, Moral, Spiritual and Moral Development

The social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of our students is undertaken by being an engaged participant in curriculum lessons, by making the most of the opportunities we provide students, and by being a safe, engaged and kind member of our increasingly diverse school community.

As with other aspects of personal development, opportunities to develop these aspects of our character are identified to students at the start of the lesson in Why This Why Now slides.

Spiritual

Students have opportunities to reflect on their own religious beliefs and listen to and respect those of others in PSHE and RE lessons.  

A praise culture and high expectations are intended t generate a love of learning among students.

Student organised events such as Eid celebrations bring together students and staff of all religious beliefs.

Moral

Our consistent praise and consequence systems ensure students understand the consequences of their actions and they are encouraged to reflect on the impact of their behaviour on others when they have failed to meet the school’s expectations in terms of being safe, engaged and kind.

One Trust Rule and Votes for Schools sessions provide students with opportunities to consider ethical and moral issues, often by relating them to issues in our local community. Students form opinions and are required to justify their position.

Social

Group discussions are facilitated in lessons allowing students to develop respectful communication skills. 

There is a strong focus on British Values across the school, essential in keeping our school society safe, engaged and kind.

Our elective curriculum provides students with opportunities to mix with students outside of their friendship circles and year groups, whilst experiencing new activities and developing knowledge in areas of their own interest.

Cultural

We celebrate differences whilst also recognising the similarities in our community. Our One Trust Rule and PSHE sessions contain a diverse range of case studies.

A broad curriculum with time allocated to music, arts and drama allows students to explore and develop their creative side.  Clubs, performance opportunities and the option to learn how to play a musical instrument take that further.

The English curriculum exposes to students to authors from different cultural backgrounds.  Our KS3  community reading programme (DEAR) allows the whole year group to read the same book at the same time.  The books are carefully chosen to complement our wider personal development programme.

Curriculum Experiences ensure that every child goes on an educational trip each year, allowing them to visit places they have never bene before.

The elective curriculum allows all students to try activities they have never tried before or develop existing talents.
